Hyperimage App

KavaSoft on Wednesday announced the release of HyperImage 1.0, a Mac OS X utility that enables you to download images from Web sites. HyperImage costs $29.99, and a demo version is available.

Enter a Web site URL in the toolbar, and HyperImage will begin to grab any images on that Web site immediately. It can grab galleries of sequential images, downloads several galleries simultaneously, and can work with password or cookie-protected sites as well.

HyperGlas
Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences

Glass painting is a medium that lends itself to being viewed from a distance. Visualised in a book, however, relations between component parts come too short. Detailed images spread over several pages make it difficult to reconstruct their overall context in the respective window. Filling a book with the type of colour illustrations commensurate for glass painting is not financially viable. However, the potential behind HyperGlass is illustrated using images of the cathedral of St. Nikolaus in Stendal, Germany with its extensive and exquisite cycle of glass windows from the Middle Ages.

HyperMedia
Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich

The visualisation of the French Revolution is one of the most exciting and lively forms of visual communication to arise from the beginning of our modern times. HyperMedia has captured a corpus of images of over 1,000 items of graphical prints. It contains documentary images as well as complex personifications. This variety of image type and the disparate forms of visualisation are captured in numerous groups with functions enabling comparisons to be made. HyperMedia aims to reconstruct the argumentative strategies of the image propaganda as it existing in France at this time and to illustrate exchange, particularly with England.

HyperExkursion and HyperTaxon
Museum für Naturkunde Berlin

Traditionally, knowledge of local flora and fauna is acquired on excursions, or field trips. Whereas in the 1960s these would have been carried out regularly, today the situation is much more humble. However, students are still highly interested in learning in the field. And in future, it is increasingly expected that students – primarily those in organismic-oriented courses – will acquire relevant knowledge of local plant and animal life independently. Our ‘virtual excursion’ aims to support students in their efforts.

Given that many researchers work with visual information that is difficult to verbalise, the HyperTaxon project aimed at exploring novel opportunities presented by the comparative image processing developed by HyperImage for systematic zoological research. The project was dedicated to the systematic and innovative representation of information on the Peloridiidae, an enigmatic group of insects (from the suborder of Hemiptera, which includes cicada, aphids and bugs, as well as other economically significant species).
